Seen our sign on a door?
This page explains what will happen to your face at a door with our sign, and what you can do about it.
Cameras inside. Video analysis flags an item going into a bag, a pocket or a coat, and sends staff a short clip. It does not recognise faces or know who anyone is. A clip leads to a report only if staff saw the person leave without paying.
The list. It holds pictures of people reported for theft at member businesses. One report alerts only the business that made it. Members nearby get alerts only after two businesses report the same person, and a trained Socioculus person confirms the match.
How long reports last. They will be deleted automatically 6 months after the last report about the person, or 12 months where violence or threats were reported. No entry lasts past a fixed maximum, which our impact assessment will set.
A camera at this door scans everyone's face to prevent and detect crime. Face scans are biometric data. Cameras inside also flag items being hidden.

Ask what we hold about you
Send us a photo of yourself and proof that it is you, such as photo ID. We search the list with your photo only if you agree in writing, and then we delete the photo. We never tell anyone whether someone else is on the list. It is free, and we reply within one month of getting your request and your proof of identity. If your request is complex, we may take up to two more months, and we tell you why within the first month.
Object to the checks
You can object, for reasons about your own situation, to the face checks at the door and to the video analysis inside. We must then stop, unless we can show compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests and rights, or need the data for a legal claim. The business decides on the video analysis inside, and we pass your objection to it. The door camera cannot skip one person's face. If we accept your objection, we remove any report about you, so no alert can be about you. We tell you what we decide.
Get a wrong report removed
If you think a report about you is wrong, tell us. While we check it, the report is paused and sends no alerts. We ask the business that made the report to look at its evidence again, and then we decide. We reply within one month. If the report is wrong, we delete it and tell every business that got an alert about you.
Find out if you are on the list
We usually cannot tell you when you are added to the list, because a report holds a picture of you, but not your name or address. Instead, the signs at every member's door and this page explain the list, and you can ask us if you are on it. If staff speak to you after an alert, they will give you a card that says how to see the report and how to challenge it.
Children
The door camera will check every face, including children's, and delete it at once if there is no match. We refuse reports about anyone who is or may be under 18.
Complain
Tell us first. Within 30 days, we confirm that we have received your complaint. You can also complain to the regulator, the Information Commission (the ICO), at ico.org.uk.
